MUST Museo del territorio vimercatese

The MUST Museo del territorio is a civic museum run by the municipality of Vimercate and is dedicated to East Brianza, the area between the Lambro and Adda rivers. Opened in 2010, it is located in the south wing of the 18th-century Villa Sottocasa in the historic centre of Vimercate and the exhibition itinerary is divided into 14 rooms on two floors covering approximately 1,000 square metres. On the ground floor there is a chronological scanning that starts from the Roman age and continues through the Middle Ages and the feudal period up to the 19th century, while on the first floor there are themes that characterise recent times: industrial production, the change of the territory and the elements of identity and memory of local cultures. Archaeological finds, works of art, objects, models, documents and videos are displayed and made accessible with the use of modern technology.
The museum collects, catalogues, conserves and exhibits cultural evidence - from artefacts to historical and artistic assets, from videos to oral traditions - to weave an evocative and scientifically valid narrative of our past. Narrative that becomes the mediating tool through which complex contents, such as the work of art or the historical document, are translated into a popular and topical language.
The great transformations underway, migration and globalisation, often disorientate and uproot the individual from places: the story then turns to the present and becomes a dialogue between the cultures that inhabit our territory. Because the museum is not just a repository of past memories, but a place for research, for the promotion of knowledge and participation, and for confrontation between different identities.
