The Sacred Mountainsincluded in the 2003 UNESCO World Heritage List, are complexes consisting of groups of chapels and other architectural artefacts built between the 16th and 17th centuries, dedicated to different aspects of the Christian faith. They represent a perfect example of the integration of architecture, figurative arts and a highly valuable natural landscape.
In Lombardy there are two of the nine Sacri Monti included in the serial site recognised by UNESCO as an asset of universal value:
- The Sacro Monte di Ossuccioconsisting of the Shrine of Our Lady of Succour and 14 chapels;
- The Sacro Monte of Varesewith the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, a place of pilgrimage of medieval origin, located on the slopes of Monte Velate.
The Varese complex includes fourteen chapels and the sanctuary: each religious architecture preserves statues and frescoes documenting the main currents of sacred art of the 17th century in the Milan area.
