Mantua (MN)

The Teatro Scientifico in Mantua, was built on commission of Count Carlo Ottavio di Colloredo, then rector of the Accademia dei Timidi by Antonio Galli da Bibbiena in 1767-69 and decorated, in 1773-75, with a façade by Piermarini designed by Paolo Pozzo.

Built between 1767 and 1769, the theatre was designed by Antonio Galli Bibiena from Parma, commissioned by the rector of the Accademia dei Timidi, Count Carlo Ottavio di Colloredo, with the aim of hosting mainly scientific meetings, but also open to performances and concerts. The theatre has a bell-shaped floor plan and is arranged on several tiers of wooden boxes. In just two years Bibiena fulfilled the obligation he had contracted with the Timidi family in 1767: he designed the special theatre, directed the construction work and finally, with the skill of a painter as well as an architect, he personally frescoed the interiors of the numerous boxes with monochrome figures, also a precious document of the distinguished master's artistic activity. The classical façade was instead created by Giuseppe Piermarini, from whom the salon on the first floor of the theatre takes its name. To this day the theatre is used to host music festivals, concerts and high-level conferences.
