SINAGOGA

The Sabbioneta Synagogue, a place of worship and meeting place for the city's Jewish community, was built in 1824, probably designed by architect Carlo Visioli. In 1840, the stucco work on the vault was carried out by Swiss artist Pietro Bolla. The present Synagogue replaced an older one, the location of which is unknown. This location was chosen following a donation by Salomone Forti, the former owner of the building. After a long period of neglect, the restoration of the Synagogue was completed in 1994 and allowed the building to reopen to the public. It is not a place of worship (the temple is used by the Jewish community of Mantua, which owns it). Of the old Synagogue, the Holy Ark had been preserved until 1970 and has now been transferred to Jerusalem. It is no longer a place of worship.
