SIMMETRIA, GIOCHI DI SPECCHI

The exhibition Symmetry, Mirror Games has been on permanent display at the 'F. Enriques' Department of Mathematics at the University of Milan since 2000. In addition to the one in Milan, it has had several installations in Italy and abroad (Spain, France, Germany, Portugal). The concept of symmetry (around which the exhibition revolves) is not only present in mathematics at different levels, but also intervenes significantly outside mathematics (in science, art, everyday life) and has an undoubtedly strong aesthetic appeal. The very fact that symmetry is such a powerful tool for interpreting reality means that the contents of the exhibition are suitable for different audiences (school students of all levels, from primary to university, but also the general public): in fact, the theme of symmetry resonates, from different points of view, with very different personal and professional experiences. The modalities of the visit can be different depending on the type of interlocutor. The tour uses chambers of mirrors to illustrate the concept of classifying a figure (or three-dimensional object) with respect to its type of symmetry. Using these chambers, it is possible to reconstruct the flat floors and polyhedra proposed in the path, but also to create, with improvised accessories or drawings, other floors or three-dimensional objects, according to one's imagination. The public can freely interact with the objects; the presence of animators who stimulate discussion on the problems proposed by the route certainly enhances the enjoyment of the exhibition. The exhibition Symmetry, Mirror Games was conceived and designed by Maria Dedò, Professor of Geometry.
