The historic Sassi- Superga rack tramway is unique in Italy. It is the continuation of a more than century-old tradition that began on 26 April 1884 with the first ride made by the funicular railway built with the Agudio system: the small train was driven by a motor pulling a steel cable that ran parallel to the track on pulleys arranged along the route. In 1934, the line was converted into a cogwheel tramway with central rail traction and today, completely restored, it offers visitors a journey back in time on the original carriages. In the Sassi station where the rack railway to Superga departs, there is a company exhibition hall of the Gruppo Torinese Trasport. At the centre of the exhibition is the horse-drawn tramway No. 197 from 1880, while along the tour you can see some memorabilia and many pictures of the history of transport in Turin. The exhibition hall, created in 2003 and refurbished in autumn 2021 with the collaboration of the ATTS (Associazione Torinese Tram Storici), offers an itinerary that is divided into five thematic areas: vehicles, network, power area, evolution of the lines, equipment of the past, tickets and service, tracks and switches. Seven totems tell as many aspects of the history of transport in Torin0, each with five significant images related to: trams on horseback, the technical evolution of trams, the 1910s, trams during the war, the golden years, ATM work, buses and trolleybuses. Images of the Sassi-Superga line are also on display. Also worth mentioning is a valuable plastic model of the Sassi station set in the 1990s. The ATTS has taken care of cataloguing each exhibit. Everything is also available online: each object has a QR code directly linked to the web, where it is possible to learn more about its history through a more detailed caption.
