Ponte-acquedotto romano di Pont d’Ael
included
includedAt Aymavilles, near the village of Pont-d'Ael, there is an aqueduct-bridge from the Roman era over the Grand Eyvia stream. It is a grandiose work of masonry and freestone blocks, about 56 m high and more than 50 m long. The structure comprised a covered passage about 1 m wide and an uncovered upper channel, with a stone slab bottom, which allowed water captured from springs on the left bank of the stream to flow through. An inscription on the north front allows it to be dated to the year 3 BC and commemorates its promoter and owner, Caius Avillius Caimus from Patavium (Padua).
Reservation recommended especially on weekends. Reservations can be made at this link (by paying the pre-sale) or on site at one of the tourist offices that are Museum Pass sales points (Aosta, Pont Saint-Martin and Courmayeur). The season ticket holder must always pass by the ticket office before the visit.
