Palazzo Salmatoris, in the heart of Cherasco, is a historic palace dating back to the 1600s and has been embellished, enlarged and remodelled several times over the centuries, its rooms having been chosen several times as the residence of the Savoy court. Here the peace of 1631 was signed, in the Hall of Silence the Shroud removed from Turin in 1706 was laid to rest, here Napoleon Bonaparte imposed the 1796 armistice on the Piedmontese. A first lot was purchased by the Municipality of Cherasco in the 1980s, a second in 2006: restoration work has made it usable as a venue for important exhibitions and displays of modern and contemporary art (including Picasso, De Pisis, Campigli, De Chirico, Ligabue, Guttuso and Morandi).
