Palazzo Moroni is one of the most significant Baroque residences in Upper Bergamo: built between 1646 and 1655 in Via Porta Dipinta at the behest of Francesco Moroni (1606-1674), it was conceived as a representative residence, an image of the social rise of its patron.

The main floor of the palace retains a refined cycle of 17th-century frescoes, made between 1649 and 1655 by the painter Gian Giacomo Barbelli (1604-1656) on an iconographic project by the erudite Father Donato Calvi (1613-1678), prior of neighbour convent of St Augustine. A second marriage, celebrated in 1838 between Alessandro Moroni (1790-1869) and the Milanese noblewoman Giulia Resta (1820-1888), then initiated a new decorative campaign in neoclassical style, started already in 1835 and entrusted to workshop of Quirino Salvatoni (1787-1871), which mainly affected the’western wing of the dwelling.

The palace environments they also hold a prestigious art collection, composed of paintings, sculptures, inlaid furniture and porcelain. Among the masterpieces stand out The Knight in Pinkthe Portrait of Isotta Brembati and the Portrait of an elderly woman in black, works of Giovan Battista Moroni (1520/1524-1578). Inhabited until 2009, the palace was equipped from the very beginning with a scenic garden, expanded over time by the Moroni family with the addition of a large production area, the so-called “ortaglia”, which today constitutes the largest private historical park in Città Alta.
