PALAZZO CITTERIO

Palazzo Citterio, also known as Palazzo Fürstenberg, is an elegant 18th-century residence located in the heart of Milan. Acquired by the State in 1972, the palace was to become the centrepiece of the 'Grande Brera', a visionary project conceived by Franco Russoli, then director of the Brera Art Gallery. In 2024, Palazzo Citterio finally saw the light of day thanks to a new restoration and fitting-out project.

In the rooms on the piano nobile, the exhibition route opens with masterpieces from the late 19th century, in continuity with the Pinacoteca's collections, which stop in the middle of that century. These are ideally connected to the new Room 40, where the famous Fiumana by Pellizza da Volpedo, until now kept in storage.

From the central hall, which acts as a hinge between the two centuries, two paths branch off: on the one side the Jesi Collection, on the other, overlooking the garden, the Vitali Collection. Together, they present over 200 works by masters such as Picasso, Boccioni, Modigliani, Morandi and Carrà. At the entrance to each collection are portraits of Emilio Jesi and Lamberto Vitali by Marino Marini.

Two new spaces for temporary exhibitions were also created: the underground Stirling Hall and the vast rooms on the second floor. The intervention enhanced the historicity of the building, transforming it into an innovative and inclusive space. The entrance hall, exhibition routes and multifunctional areas were designed to establish a dynamic dialogue with the city.
