ORTO BOTANICO CITTÀ STUDI

The Città Studi Botanical Garden is a didactic and experimental garden that occupies an area of 25,000 square metres and is home to numerous plant species, both native and exotic. The Garden was conceived both to support university research and teaching, and to bring the general public closer to the knowledge of plant species. Activities relating to the conservation of spontaneous flora are carried out in the Garden: some typical Lombardy environments have been recreated, and various native and exotic species are cultivated. One of the strengths of the Botanical Garden Città Studi is the three greenhouses, state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to advanced experimental research, with automated climate-controlled departments for maintaining the purity of plant species. These areas are used for international collaborations in numerous research programmes. Collections of ferns and carnivorous, myrmecophilous, cactaceous, succulent, dyeing, aromatic and food plants as well as an exhibition on the domestication of plants and an installation dedicated to forensic botany can be observed in the various paths. University teaching is aimed at students of various degree courses of the University's scientific faculties. The Botanical Garden Città Studi offers a wide range of educational proposals for schools and welcomes hundreds of classes every year, of all levels. The result is a facility where research, teaching and scientific dissemination meet.
