Museo Walser

Alagna Valsesia (VC)
included
Inaugurated in 1976, the Walser museum in Alagna is a perfectly preserved hut dating from 1628, an unaltered example of what the Walser House was like over the centuries and its use.

The Walser built dwellings that housed under the same roof stables, spaces for rest, social life and food storage, in a harmonious synthesis of the fundamental needs of these high-altitude farmers. The museum shows how the ancient Walser knew how to create an efficient system inside the house, which was well suited to their need for self-sufficiency, and recounts daily life through the tools in common use, with a careful journey through the material culture of the ancient people of Alagna.
The three-storey building has a dry-stone basement, on which the wooden 'Blockbau' part rests, made entirely of original wood, while the roof is made of 'blatte' stone slabs. In the current museum layout in the basement there is the 'Godu' stable, with its stone floor, the 'Stand' living room adjacent and communicating with it, with its wooden floor, the 'Firhus' kitchen with the tools for cooking food, the milk processing room and the room for preparing yarn and weaving hemp.
On the mezzanine floor, above the stable, is the bedroom ('Stuba') with the alcove, the room for storing carpenter's tools, the craft room and the document room. On the top floor, one can visit the hayloft ('Stodal') with its agricultural and woodworking tools and the pantry ('Spicher') with shelves and racks used for storing grain and food. Around the building, the perched loggias, characteristic of Alagna's Walser houses, are perfectly preserved.
