MUSEO GIARDINO DELLA CIVILTÀ DELLA SETA “MARIO MONASTEROLO”

Racconigi (CN)
included
Historiographical museum focusing on the historical memory of silk and silk factories, which characterised the town of Racconigi on a social, economic and cultural level from around the mid-15th century to the mid-20th century.

Inside the museum run by the association Sul filo della Seta, there is an itinerary reconstructing the main stages of five centuries of the history of silk production in Racconigi. The museum thus becomes a key to understanding the city, which is still littered with traces of the silk civilisation: the redeveloped former silk factories, signs, water channels, street names. There is no lack of insights into the personalities who played a fundamental role, from the initiators Savoy, to the Franzero family's quality research, to financiers such as the Agnellis and the family that closed the last silk mill in 1948, the Manissero family. The evocative niches, thanks to a mix of original tools and reconstructions, offer a glimpse into the life of the silk factory workers and the many women silk factory workers. The visit can be concluded with the viewing of videos including documentaries on sericulture and interesting testimonies by elderly people who lived through the era of the silk mills in Racconigi.
