Since 1978, the Piedmontese Railway Museum has been finding and preserving railway material of historical interest, with particular reference to the rolling stock and traction systems that have characterised the history of means of transport in Piedmont; it is a living museum: in fact, some pieces of the collection are in working order and could be used again for historical and tourist services.
Since 2001, the museum has had its own exhibition centre located in Savigliano where it is possible to see various historic rolling stock including steam, diesel and electric locomotives, wagons, carriages and special railway vehicles, many still to be restored. The exhibition centre is also frequently used by film crews for filming dramas and short films.
The museum building houses the collection of memorabilia, tools and accessories, as well as the modelling section, which includes a large collection of model trains from all eras and around the world, including the large electronically controlled digital model railway.
In the outdoor garden, two large-scale railway circuits host the circulation of 1-scale models in fine weather, while a 71/4-scale ring is run by a battery locomotive and wagons where you can take a ride.
The library holds more than 2500 books and magazines on railway topics, both technical and popular.
