Museo del Territorio Biellese

Inaugurated in December 2001 to collect and conserve Biella's heritage, it has been enriched over the years with the addition of various sections.
The palaeontology and archaeology sections: with marine fossils from the Biellese area, a one-piece pirogue from the Roman era, finds from Bessa, the Roman necropolis of Cerrione and Biella, and the area dedicated to the Dolcinian Middle Ages. A high-impact display, also multimedia, that creates suggestions and emotions.

In addition to this, there is a rich Egyptian section, in which the wooden sarcophagus finely decorated with a mummy belonging to a woman stands out in a very atmospheric display case in the centre of the room; and a room dedicated to artefacts belonging to the cultures of Mesoamerica and the Andean territories, before the arrival of the Conquistadors.

The exhibition of the historical-artistic collections, on the other hand, begins with the pictorial evidence of the 12th century: from here it is possible to follow the evolution of figurative culture and local collecting taste, with 16th-century works from the most illustrious Vercelli workshops, paintings by Caravaggio and the 18th-century Veneto school that bear witness to the cultural environment within which the Galliari brothers worked.
The 19th and 20th century collections present Piedmontese landscape painting with notable paintings by Antonio Fontanesi, Marco Calderini, Giovanni Giani, Giovanni Piumati and the production of Lorenzo Delleani.
Emilio Longoni's Divisionist masterpiece opens the 20th century of excellence, together with works by Carlo Carrà and the major exponents of the historical avant-gardes, such as Renè Magritte, Paul Klee, Max Ernst, Marc Chagall, Joan Mirò, Giacomo Balla and Lucio Fontana.
