Museo Carceri Le Nuove

The museum tour takes visitors on a journey of discovery through the cells where ordinary men suffered for the affirmation of a free and democratic Italy. Through testimonies and reconstructions, crucial pages of history are retraced: from the most notorious criminal episodes to the prison guards, from the events of the late 19th century to the First World War, up to the Biennio Rosso, the anti-fascist struggles, racial persecution and the Resistance, with particular attention to the infamous Primo Braccio tedesco (First German Wing). The story also covers riots, stories of fascists, the last execution in Italy, the years of terrorism with the killing of four officers, and the testimony of universal values preserved in the cells of those condemned to death.

The route of the Air-raid shelter, built eighteen metres underground inside the prison, is unique in terms of its historical and architectural features. Its opening confirms what has been handed down through oral and written testimonies of political prisoners, and highlights the contribution of prisoners of Jewish, Italian and foreign origin to the construction of our collective memory. This special visit gives voice to a forgotten underground space, where telling the truth becomes a genuine act of justice.

The tour Sacred & Profane It extends along the central arm of the structure and offers a unique experience: from the spirituality of the Central Church and its Cubicles to the unsettling architecture of the Director's hidden passages, amid evocative imagery, history and atmospheres steeped in meaning.
