MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO “PAOLO GIOVIO”
includedThe Paolo Giovio Archaeological Museum is housed in Palazzo Giovio, which was the town residence of the Counts Giovio. The Museum consists of different sections: Prehistory and Protohistory Section: the illustration of the evolutionary process that led to the appearance of mankind introduces the exhibition of chronologically ordered archaeological materials discovered in the Como area; Roman Age Section (at Palazzo Olginati): illustrates the Roman period in Como and in the area through the finds discovered here. Some architectural elements testify to the refinement that must have characterised the city in the first centuries AD, especially at the time of Pliny the Younger from Como; Collection Section: this section presents artefacts from different cultures acquired mostly thanks to the legacy of an important collector from Como, Alfonso Garovaglio. This section currently displays Egyptian finds, Greek and Magna-Greek vases, small bronzes, gems, as well as the prehistoric collection of I. Regazzoni. The Egyptian collection includes a thousand objects collected or purchased to document various aspects of ancient Egyptian artistic production. Medieval Lapidary Section: the section of medieval and modern tombstones is located in the portico and along the staircase of Palazzo Giovio.
