MUSEI CIVICI DI MONZA – CASA DEGLI UMILIATI

Monza (MB)
included
The Musei Civici di Monza house works of art and archaeological finds that tell the story of the city's history and culture, as well as pieces of contemporary art. There are many works by Monza masters, including Mosè Bianchi and Pompeo Mariani, together with other names in 19th and 20th century Italian art: Giuseppe Grandi, Anselmo Bucci, Arturo Martini and Francesco Hayez.

The Musei Civici di Monza comprise the collections of the Pinacoteca Civica and the Museo Storico dell'Arengario. Their public institution dates back to 1935 and was created around an important collection nucleus that came to the Municipality in 1923 from the Galbesi Segrè bequest.
Over the course of time, the collection's holdings have been enriched with different works of art and repertoires originating from donations, purchases and as a legacy of the most significant artistic and cultural events that took place in the city during the 20th century: Biennales, ISIA, the City of Monza Painting Prize and, in more recent years, the Biennale Giovani.
Among the collections of an artistic nature, the paintings and sculptures of Monza artists working in the second half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century stand out for their importance and numerical density. Also of interest is the conspicuous nucleus of 20th century drawings and graphics, which entered the collections through direct bequests from the artists or their heirs.
Present from the very beginning in the collections of the Civic Museums is also a significant heritage of ancient and modern prints that constitutes the Prints Cabinet.
In its current location in via Teodolinda, created by renovating a historic building of the religious order of the Umiliati present in the city in the Middle Ages, a selection of works emblematic of the historical and artistic vicissitudes of Monza are on display.
An exhibition space for temporary exhibitions allows the museum to highlight and explore themes and authors related to the repertoire of the civic collections.
