Pavia Civic Museums

Since the Second World War, the Pavia Civic Museums have been located in the Visconti Castle, built by Galeazzo II Visconti between 1360 and 1365. The tour takes place inside rooms that still preserve precious frescoes from the Visconti and Sforza periods.
Today, one can admire a heritage of art and history particularly linked to the city of Pavia and its territory, with unique masterpieces such as pieces of Longobard goldsmithing, the plutei of Santa Maria Teodote, floor mosaics from the 12th century, the wooden model of the cathedral, as well as paintings by famous artists such as Gentile da Fabriano, Antonello da Messina, Giovanni Bellini, Vincenzo Foppa, Ambrogio Bergognone, Francesco Hayez, Tranquillo Cremona, and Federico Zandomeneghi.
The Civic Museums include collections that are heterogeneous in terms of type, divided into different sections, following a chronological path: the Archaeological Museum and the Pavia Lombard Capital of the Kingdom section; the Romanesque and Renaissance sculpture section; the Malaspina Picture Gallery (14th - 17th century); the Hall of the wooden model of the Cathedral; the 17th and 18th century Picture Gallery; the Collector's Room, the one dedicated to the Battle of Pavia in 1525, the Visconti Library.
The second floor is entirely devoted to 19th-century collections: the Risorgimento Museum with the World War I room, the Plaster Library and the Modern Sculpture Section; the 19th-century Picture Gallery, the Civic School of Painting room, and the Morone Collection. This is followed by Pavia's 20th-century Landscapes and Spazio 900/2000.
The area for temporary exhibitions completes the space picture, together with the conference room and lecture hall.
