Promoted and realised by the Museo delle Storie in collaboration with the Municipality of Bergamo and the Bergamo UNESCO Secretariat, with the fundamental contribution of the Fondazione Emilio Lombardini, the opening of this new museum represents a crucial step in the process of enhancing the city walls, which became a World Heritage Site in 2017.
Located inside the monumental Porta di Sant'Agostino, symbol of Venetian domination, the museum itinerary tells the story of the design and construction of the fortress of Bergamo, through a careful selection of testimonies from the 16th century and the innovative use of multimedia. The beating heart of the museum is a highly suggestive immersive room, where the history of the walls comes to life thanks to the voices of its protagonists.
The itinerary is divided into four sections, arranged in an evocative scenographic layout, which place the history of the fortress of Bergamo in broader contexts: the territorial defence system of the Republic of Venice, Renaissance architectural culture with the invention of 'fortresses à la moderna', and the military revolution of 16th century Europe. Didactic and scenographic apparatuses lead the visitor inside the building site of the fortress, in the years of its construction (1561-1588).
Thanks to multimedia stations, special content and state-of-the-art technology, a visit to the museum becomes an immersive experience, inviting visitors to walk the walls in person and experience the history of the fortress up close.
