Art Museum
MAU | Museo di Arte Urbana
includedThe MAU is the first actually realised and still ongoing project in Italy of a public contemporary art settlement located and concentrated within a precise portion of urban space of a large metropolitan centre.
The neighbourhood in which it originated is the Borgo Vecchio Campidoglio, a working-class neighbourhood of the late 19th century that has retained its grid-like structure characterised by low houses with inner courtyards with green areas, divided by narrow, paved streets, and by the presence of craft workshops, artists' studios and trendy bars.
The MAU project started in 1995. To date, over 180 permanent murals by more than 102 artists have been installed.
90 % of the works produced were placed on the walls of private buildings in cooperation with residents, making the MAU a unique project of extended education on contemporary art.
Since 2014, the MAU has been invited to take its operational experience to other areas of the city, including Falchera Nuova, with the realisation of 50 more permanent works, among which the Panchine d'Autore invented by Vito Navolio stand out.
The Museum of Urban Art collaborates with trade and crafts, with historical institutes such as the Museo Diffuso della Resistenza, and has agreements with academies, high schools and technical-professional institutes.
The MAU Gallery at Via Rocciamelone 7c was opened in 2014, where exhibitions and activities are organised with free admission.
