MAO – Museo d’Arte Orientale
includedThe MAO - Museum of Oriental Art aims to offer the broadest possible representation of the artistic production of Asian countries, by accepting the main cultural and figurative traditions of the continent.
Le museum collections include almost 2300 works, covering a vast time span, from the Neolithic up to the early 20th century. In addition to these 1400 archaeological finds from pre-Islamic times, from the excavations of Seleucia and Coche in Iraq, valuable evidence of ancient Mesopotamian civilisations.
The permanent exhibition is divided into five galleries, each dedicated to a great cultural area of Asia:
- South and South-East Asia, with works from Indian subcontinent and theIndochina;
- China, cradle of a millennial and multiform artistic civilisation;
- Himalayan Region, crossroads of cultures Indian and Chinese;
- Japan, where Asian and European influences have generated original and refined expressions;
- Islamic countries, witnesses of a extraordinary artistic flourishing extending from the’Central Asia at Mediterranean.
