The Fort of Exilles stands on a rocky spur at the narrowest point of the Susa Valley. An ideal place for controlling the valley, the fort is first mentioned in the 11th century, in the Chronicon Novalicenses. From a fortified stronghold, it was transformed into a castellania to become a majestic fortress between the 17th and 18th centuries, making it the most massive fortress in the Alps. Abandoned and vandalised after 8 September 1943, it remained at the mercy of itself until the late 1990s, when the Piedmont region decided to renovate it and turn it into a museum. For the past eight years it has been managed by the Associazione Amici di Exilles and, since 2022, artistic management has been entrusted to the Associazione Revejo - Borgate dal Vivo.
NB: admission to the Fortress of Exilles is free. The guided tour (optional) costs € 8.00, which can also be paid for with the Abbonamento Musei Piemonte Valle d'Aosta.
