The Fortress of Bard is an imposing military structure built in the first half of the 19th century on top of a fortress at the entrance to the Aosta Valley. Thanks to an articulated renovation project, the fortress is now a cultural and tourist centre hosting museums, exhibitions, events, and state-of-the-art information and reception services.

The Fortress of Bard houses three permanent museum routes, each dedicated to a different aspect of Alpine history and culture.

The Museum of the Alps is a multidisciplinary, interactive and multimedia itinerary that explores the universe of the Alps and mountains. The 25 rooms blend tradition and innovation, offering an engaging account of the mountains, experienced and shaped by man over the centuries. The tour is divided into three sections: the first introduces the natural and anthropic elements of the Alpine landscape, the second explores Alpine civilisation, while the third analyses the transformation of the mountains in modern times.

The Ferdinand. Museum of Fortifications and Frontiers takes visitors on an exciting journey through the evolution of defensive techniques, siege tools and the concept of the frontier itself, from ancient history to the contemporary age.

Finally, the history of the Fortress of Bard is revealed in the ancient Prisons. Films, documents and 3D reconstructions guide the public to discover the architectural evolution of the fortress and the events that have marked its destiny, from the year 1000 to its reconstruction in the 19th century, up to the present day. The 24 cells, distributed in four sections, are preceded by an entrance gallery presenting an iconographic collection of the Fortress: period prints, paintings and reproductions.
