The Sogno di Luce Ecomuseum is dedicated to Alessandro Cruto and the discovery of the carbon filament of the electric light bulb. The Opificio, built by Alessandro Cruto, began production of the Cruto-patented carbon filament electric bulb on an international scale in 1886.
Alessandro Cruto, almost unknown to most, was born in Piossasco in 1847 (in the same year as Galileo Ferraris and Thomas Edison), without any specific studies but with great inventiveness and intelligence. Obsessed with the dream of producing an artificial diamond that he was unable to bring to light, he ended up using his experience to create the first synthetic carbon filament for the first light bulbs.
It will almost be forgotten, but Alpignano will continue to be linked to lamps with the headquarters of PHILIPS. The factory is home to the Ecomuseum, in an evocative and stimulating setting that develops along three routes celebrating Cruto's discovery and trying to make him the notoriety he deserves.
Throughout the year, the Associazione Amici dell'Ecomuseo Sogno di Luce offers events, exhibitions and educational activities that extend the standard opening programme and is available, by prior arrangement, to host groups and schools with scientific workshops. Info on www.ecomuseocruto.it
