Ecomuseo del Granito
Non in abbonamentoCharacteristic of these places is the presence of the 'Granites of the Lakes', outcrops of magmatic rock formed between 275 and 283 million years ago, in the Permian: the white granite of Montorfano, the pink granite of Baveno and the green granite of Mergozzo."
The Granite Ecomuseum, recognised by the Piedmont Region in 2007, involves the entire Mergozzo area and its surroundings, including the quarrying areas of the pink Candoglia marble and the white Montorfano, green Mergozzo and pink Baveno granites. For the joint valorisation of the granite theme, an agreement has been active since January 2017, in which the Municipality of Mergozzo, the Municipality of Baveno with the Granum Museum and the Archaeological Group of Mergozzo are partners, acting as a network within the Ecomuseum to tell the millenary mining history in the area of the "Granites of the Lakes", outcrops of Permian (275-283 million years old) magmatic rock, healthy and compact, suitable for stone quarrying. The territory of the Ecomuseum, which is part of the Sesia Val Grande UNESCO Geopark, is an extraordinary open-air laboratory for observing the trade of today's quarrymen, the traces of ancient workings in disused quarries, and the countless uses of local stone in traditional architecture, terracing, and ancient and recent art monuments.
