MAC – Museo Archeologico di Casteggio e dell’Oltrepò Pavese
includedThe Civico Museo Archeologico di Casteggio e dell'Oltrepò Pavese (MAC) (Archaeological Museum of Casteggio and the Oltrepò Pavese) was founded in 1974 with a precise aim: to become the point of reference for archaeological culture in the Oltrepò area.
The idea of setting up a new museum in Casteggio originated from the discovery, in Via Torino, of two brick tombs dating back to Roman times, and the need to find a suitable place to store the area's numerous archaeological finds. From that moment on, thanks to an agreement stipulated between the Municipality of Casteggio and the Lombardy Archaeological Superintendency, and after a general renovation of the Certosa Cantù (1999), the exhibition was enlarged, becoming a clear reflection of the historical-archaeological past of the Oltrepò Pavese. Moreover, since 2007 the MAC has been a Museum recognised by the Region of Lombardy, and plays an important didactic-dissemination role vis-à-vis educational institutions in the Province (and beyond).
At present the museum, which is part of the Sistema Museale d'Oltrepò, is characterised by four sections divided according to a chronological crescendo (Geological and Palaeontological, Prehistoric and Protohistoric, Roman, Late Antique and Medieval), to which a part dedicated to collecting must be added.
The latest acquisitions, made accessible to the public after restoration, are characterised by the fragmentary Roman bronzes found in Via Anselmi in Casteggio (2012), the delicate glass goblets and medieval ceramics found in Vicolo Oratorio in Stradella (2019), and the suggestive Mercury bronze and iron hoe from the Roman era, from Rivanazzano Terme - loc. Cascina Boarezza (2019).
