Chiesa Paleocristiana di San Lorenzo

Near Porta Prætoria, along the consular road coming from Eporedia (Ivrea), an important necropolis developed in Roman times, in an area used for burial purposes already in the late Iron Age. With the advent of Christianity, this destination did not change, so much so that a basilica was built in the early 5th century to receive the burials of the first bishops of Aosta. The early Christian church has a Latin cross plan whose arms end in apses of different types.
The model for this building derives from the prestigious Milanese monuments, and in particular from the Basilica Apostolorum (currently San Nazaro), built by Bishop Ambrose towards the end of the 4th century. Various types of tombs line the perimeter walls of the church, which was destroyed in Carolingian times and then rebuilt and modified several times from the 11th-12th centuries. Its current appearance dates back to the last rebuilding in the mid-17th century.
