Château d’Aymavilles

The Aymavilles Castle is situated in the municipality of the same name in Aosta Valley, on a hill surrounded by vineyards along the road to Cogne. It is a building one of a kind, which blends in with its surroundings Medieval and Baroque periods, the result of the family’s architectural endeavours Challant which, over the centuries, has adapted its structure to the needs and tastes of the time.

The first mention of the castle dates back to May 1207. The building began to undergo significant alterations from 14th century, with the transfer to the Challant family, a prominent noble family in the region. During the 15th century The castle has been enhanced by four corner towers, from a double walls and the construction of the’top floor.

A major building programme dates back to the time of Joseph-Félix de Challant when, between the 1713 and 1728, the spaces between the four corner towers have been embellished with loggias decorated with elegant stucco features, whilst the interiors have been significantly redesigned to make them more comfortable. The creation of the terraced park helped to give the castle the appearance of a modern stately home, causing it to lose its function as a medieval defensive fortress entirely.

Over the centuries 19th and 20th, following several changes of ownership, the castle has undergone numerous internal alterations, linked to its earlier use as house-museum (at the behest of the last descendant of the family, Vittorio Cacherano della Rocca) and subsequently as summer residence for families from Piedmont and Liguria. In the 1970 The castle has become part of the assets of the Autonomous Region Aosta Valley.

Reservation recommended especially on weekends. Reservations can be made at this link (by paying the pre-sale) or on site at one of the tourist offices that are Museum Pass sales points (Aosta, Pont Saint-Martin and Courmayeur). The season ticket holder must always pass by the ticket office before the visit.
