Origins and History

The complex’s origins date back to the Middle Ages:

• The medieval abbey: Founded around the year 1000 by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of San Benigno di Fruttuaria, the complex was originally established as a priory.
• The Collège Saint-Bénin: In 1588, the site was transformed into a renowned educational institution. For centuries, it served as the main centre of education for the ruling and intellectual classes of the Aosta Valley, and also hosted distinguished figures such as the writer and politician Xavier de Maistre.

From Deconsecration to Exhibition Space

During the 20th century, the ancient deconsecrated church and the adjacent Romanesque bell tower — characterised by elegant mullioned windows — underwent a meticulous restoration project spearheaded by the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta.

Opened as an exhibition centre in the 1990s, the Saint-Benin has retained its impressive interior architecture, including the single nave and the chancel, which provide a striking and spectacular setting for exhibitions.
