CASTELLO SCALIGERO
Sirmione (BS)
included The Scaliger Castle at Sirmione is an extraordinary example of lake fortification and one of the most spectacular and best-preserved Scaliger fortresses on Lake Garda. Built after the mid 14th century, it takes its name from the Della Scala family that ruled over Verona and its territory between the 13th and 14th centuries. Belonging to the castle is a dock that still today encloses a small portion of the lake.
The Scaliger Castle of Sirmione is a fortress from the Scaliger era and represents the only access to the historic centre of Sirmione. It is considered one of the best preserved and most complete castles in Italy, as well as a very rare example of lake fortification.
Its location is extraordinary: overlooks Lake Garda and includes a fortified dockyard, capable of accommodating boats within the walls. Access to the fortress is exclusively through the drawbridge, the only possible entrance, as the castle is surrounded by the waters of the lake on all sides, to emphasise its defensive function and spectacular character.
