Almost nine centuries of construction and remodelling have shaped the heterogeneous fortified complex that, from its foundation (11th-12th centuries) until the early 20th century, belonged to the noble Sarriod family. In addition to the remains of a rare 13th-century wall painting cycle in the chapel, the interior preserves valuable evidence of the 15th century, the time when the family reached the height of its political prestige.
Unique in its kind is the 15th-century ceiling of the reception hall, supported by 171 wooden shelves carved with monstrous creatures, grotesque figures and fantastic animals: a true journey into the rich medieval imagination.
