CASTELLO DUCALE DI AGLIÈ
includedLocated in Agliè, in the province of Turin, the Castle of Agliè It is an imposing and elegant historic residence, whose current appearance is the result of the superimposition of four major construction phases. The complex is surrounded by historic gardens and a vast park, which enhance its monumental character.
The original core of the castle dates back to the 13th century.; the original medieval structure was subsequently incorporated into the grandiose residence commissioned in the mid-17th century by Duke Philip of San Martino. The residence was then surrounded by a large formal garden and already embellished with finely decorated greenhouses.
In 1764, the complex was purchased by Charles Emmanuel III. for the younger son Benedetto Maria Maurizio, Duke of Chiablese. Thus began a new and significant period of construction and decoration, entrusted to the’architect Ignazio Birago di Borgaro, who expanded the front towards the village and built the Church and the Connecting gallery, known as “Gallery of the Tribunes”. During this period, the Parco adopted a rigorous geometric approach and was enriched by the scenic horseshoe fountain“, work of Collino brothers.
Between 1825 and 1849 The castle and park were renovated once again at the behest of King Carlo Felice and his wife Mary Christina: the following date back to this period small theatre and the new layout of the Royal Apartment.
In 1939, the castle was sold to the state., which entrusted its restoration and management to the Superintendency for Architectural and Landscape Heritage of Piedmont. Today, the complex comprises over 300 rooms and safeguards a rich and varied heritage of furnishings and collections, ranging from paintings at archaeological finds, up to the surprising ornithological and oriental collections.
The castle is surrounded by a complex system of gardens: the Italian gardenthe Terrace garden or hanging gardenthe Eighteenth-century garden with the Fountain of the Four Riversthe Park and the English garden. Since 1997, Agliè Castle has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site..
