Castle
Castello di Ivrea
includedSituated in the historical heart of Ivrea, the Castle of the Red Towers - as Giosuè Carducci called it - was built in 1358 at the behest of Amedeo VI of Savoy. The building was the site of political events and sumptuous medieval festivities and still retains the character of a defensive fortress with its dominant position over the city.
It is one of the symbols of Ivrea, with its characteristic three-tower profile (the fourth tower, used as an ammunition depot, was severed at the level of the walkways in 1676, following a violent explosion).
After a long period of closure, during which major restoration work was carried out by the Municipality of Ivrea - owner of the property - it is once again possible to discover its history and curiosities through a guided tour that allows visitors to explore the large courtyard, some of the cells dating back to the period when the castle was used as a prison, and to climb up the patrol walkways, which have never before been open to the public.
