Castle
Castello di Introd

The origins of Introd Castle probably date back to the 12th century, when a square keep surrounded by walls was built. Around 1260, Pierre Sarriod d'Introd enlarged the original structure, initiating a series of transformations that, in the 15th century, gave the castle the characteristic polygonal, almost rounded shape that still distinguishes it from other Valdostan manors.
These architectural interventions coincided with the height of the power of the Sarriod family, who had consolidated their dominion over the seigniories of Introd and La Tour (Saint-Pierre). During the 19th century, the castle was severely damaged by two fires, but was restored in the early 20th century by Cavalier Gonella, with the intervention of the architect Chevalley.
Opposite the castle is an extraordinary example of medieval Valdostan architecture: a 15th-century granary made entirely of wood, used for storing grain and seeds. The two doors of the granary have wrought iron locks dating back to the time of construction; one in particular, finely worked, depicts a castle.
Currently owned by the Counts Caracciolo di Brienza and granted in loan to the Introd municipality, the castle is managed by the Fondation Grand Paradiswhich takes care of the guided tours.
From the top of the 13th-century tower there is a spectacular view of Mont Blanc and the main peaks framing the city of Aosta. Inside the castle, in the evocative hexagonal hall, an emotional station has been set up dedicated to the bull of Pope Nicholas V, which authorised the marriage between Catherine de Challant and Pierre d'Introd. The installation, interactive and immersive, combines scenographic elements and virtual content, allowing visitors to observe the original document and listen to the narration directly from the voice of the protagonists.
Guided tours take place every hour and are only accessible with compulsory booking.
