CASTELLO DI ADELAIDE | MUSEO CIVICO CITTÀ DI SUSA

Susa (TO)
included
From the top of the Susa rock, this castle has witnessed millennia of history. The castle, which bears traces of the work carried out in successive eras, houses a civic museum with an innovative layout that narrates the crucial role that the Alpine passes and the Susa Valley territory played in the thousand-year history of the Savoys.

In the Adelaide Castle, two paths intertwine: the archaeological one and the museum one. In fact, the architectural artefact is itself 'a museum', since the forms it has today are the result of a history spanning two thousand years and more. On the ground floor is the archaeological itinerary, which shows what has become a museum of the Roman Praetorium, of which structures and mosaics are preserved, and on the remains of which the Castrum, later a medieval castle, and the Savoy 'palace' were erected. Passing through the gallery on the ground floor, the visitor is led on a journey through images in the history of the Castle and the entire city of Susa. The exhibition also houses artefacts found during the latest restoration work that testify to the use of these rooms up to the present day. On the first floor, the wunderkammer leads visitors into the atmosphere of the late 19th century, taking them back in time to the birth of this Alpine museum, characterised by its dual vocation, archaeological and naturalistic.
