Basilica di Sant’Andrea
Mantua (MN)
included Commissioned by Marquis Ludovico Gonzaga and built from 1472 onwards to a design by the humanist Leon Battista Alberti, the city's co-cathedral, which houses the tomb of court painter Andrea Mantegna, represents one of the highest expressions of Italian Renaissance architecture.
The basilica houses in its crypt, inside the Sacred Vases, the most venerable relic of Christianity: the Precious Blood of Jesus, brought to Mantua, according to tradition, by the Roman soldier Longinus and rediscovered thanks to the miraculous revelations of Saint Andrew. A relic that is a sign of redemption and faith and has contributed to the development and fame of the city.
Through walkways that have never before been open to the public, you can reach the huge 18th-century dome, designed by Filippo Juvarra to complete the structure, and enjoy exclusive and panoramic views of the building and the city.
