AREA ARCHEOLOGICA CAVELLAS

Entering directly from the supermarket car park, you are immersed in the history of an important settlement of the 1st century A.D. Located in the heart of the Cavallina Valley, the village stood in a strategic position along the road that joined Bergomum to Val Camonica; a short distance away was also a statio, an essential stopping point for changing horses and refreshments for travellers.

Despite the long continuity of housing, in 6th century A.D. a series of fires and violent flooding of the Drione stream forced the residents to abandon the area. In the centuries that followed, a blanket of debris over 4 metres submerged the settlement: it was this natural “seal” that protected the Roman structures, preserving them intact until their rediscovery.

Today, the archaeological area extends over more than 1,000 m2, revealing only part of its true extent. The museum displays valuable artefacts found during the excavations - pottery, loom weights and stone millstones - which offer a vivid insight into the daily life and craftsmanship of the time.
