AREA ARCHEOLOGICA CAVELLAS

Casazza (BG)
included
Cavellas is a Roman-era village discovered between 1987 and 1992 during the construction of a supermarket, under which it was preserved and is now open to the public: following a museumisation project by the Casazza municipality, the site has been open to the public since 2015.

Going down the stairs that can be reached from the supermarket car park, one can visit the remains of an important settlement that arose in the 1st century A.D. at the bottom of the Cavallina Valley, along the road that connected Bergomum with the Camonica Valley: not far from Cavellas, structures referable to a statio were also found, i.e. a resting and changing area for the horses that were used in moving along the ancient road axis.
The village had a long continuity of life, but from the 6th century A.D. it was abandoned due to fires and floods, as well as the continuous flooding of the Drione stream, which made life in Cavellas impossible. Over the centuries, the settlement was buried by more than 4 m of debris, which nevertheless protected the Roman remains and preserved them in excellent condition to this day.
The archaeological area covers more than 1,000 square metres and, to date, has only been partially excavated. During the investigations, numerous artefacts were recovered, such as pots and pans made of pottery, loom weights and stone millstones. These artefacts testify to the craft activities that took place in the village and are now on display along the visitor trail.
The site has ample parking and disabled access. The layout includes bilingual panels and captions for the visually impaired, an interactive touch screen and educational paths for children.
