Archivio di Stato di Novara
Non in abbonamentoL'State Archives of Novara is not only the guardian of the historical memory of the region, but a living cultural centre operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture. Since its founding in 1970, the Institute has combined document preservation with intensive valorisation activities, opening up to schools, universities and the network of local cultural institutes.
Its location itself is a piece of history: it occupies a portion of the former monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena. Within its walls a masterpiece of functional cabinetry is preserved: the grandiose walnut shelving by Luigi Orelli, which stretches over 2,300 linear metres. The façade, ennobled by Giuseppe Ardenti's “Genius of Conservation”, welcomes visitors to a space that, since 2007, has combined ancient charm with modern standards of safety and conservation.
Today, the Archives look to the future: thanks to the digitisation of inventories and draft lists, the history of Novara is just a click away for scholars from all over the world. For research assistance, the staff is available by e-mail, while events and news are shared daily on social channels.
