News published on 28 October 2024
The St George's Castle of Mantua, part of the Ducal Palace, presents a new permanent exhibition dedicated to the Mantuan Renaissance. This exhibition of painting and sculpture explores a period of intense cultural flourishing, with a focus on Andrea Mantegna, a prominent figure in the city from around 1450, and on artists such as Donatello, Luca Fancelli e Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi (known as the Antique). The exhibition has been carefully designed to highlight the dialogue between painting and sculpture, outlining the transition to the classical values that characterise the Renaissance.
The rooms, decorated with antique motifs and friezes Moorish-style, tracing the artistic evolution from Ludovico II Gonzaga to Federico II Gonzaga, who inaugurated a further season with Giulio Romano. Among the over seventy works on display include paintings, sculptures, terracottas and engravings, many of them restored for the occasion. Some new acquisitions from the Doge's Palace are visible for the first time, enriching the the city's artistic heritage.
The new section will be part of the tour without any surcharge over the usual entrance fee, thus extending the route with the castle courtyard, arcades and the eight rooms on the ground floor.
