Restoration and reopening of the Courtyard of the Cavallerizza

The exhibition Giovan Battista Scultori. Print engraver and excellent sculptor offers the public the opportunity to admire the magnificent Courtyard of the Cavallerizzarecently restored. Thanks to funding from the Culture and Tourism Master Planthe intervention made spaces previously closed to the public accessible.

The courtyard, part of the Gonzaga complex, dates back to the 1540when he was designed as a runner between the Loggia dei Marmi and the Palazzina della Rustica. Completed by John Baptist BertaniIt assumed its present appearance probably in the late 16th century. Originally known as Exhibition Courtyardhosted the stallions of the Gonzaga family, becoming the venue for performances and entertainment for illustrious guests, such as the 1575 with the exercises and demonstrations of thoroughbred horses.

The restoration has restored the original colours, giving the Courtyard back its monumental vibrancy.
