Milan celebrates 130 years since the discovery of X-rays
News published on 28 October 2025
Two important anniversaries occur in 2025: on 27 March 1845, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born and on 8 November 1895, the scientist discovered the X-ray, revolutionising medical diagnostics.
The Ospedale Maggiore in Milan was among the first in Italy to take up the discovery: as early as April 1897, Carlo Luraschi carried out the first X-ray experiments and, the following year, applied the technology to the wounded from the 1898 riots. As early as 1904, thanks to Dr Ambrogio Bertarelli, radiotherapy applications for dermatological treatment were also introduced.
To mark the occasion, on Tuesday 11 November 2025 at 5 p.m. at Via Francesco Sforza 28, Milan, the conference will be held “From X-ray discovery to diagnostic and technological applications”, accompanied by a exhibition of antique X-ray plates and X-ray equipmentin collaboration with the Economic Society of Chiavari EFTS.
