Work in Progress. Behind the scenes of the new production

The University of Pavia’s Museum of Archaeology is reopening to the public at its original location, the historic A tour of the 15th-century San Matteo Hospital.

This project forms part of the plan to revamp the University’s Museum System, with the aim of showcasing its heritage and enhancing educational activities and guidance for schools.

The temporary exhibition

The museum is currently hosting a temporary exhibition in progress, curated by architect Massimo Ferrari: the display cases used to house the artefacts over the past two years remain at the centre of the galleries, arranged according to their original historical order, and have become the visual focal point of the exhibition itinerary.

The collection

Established in 1820 to coincide with the creation of Italy’s first chair of archaeology, the museum houses artefacts ranging from prehistory to ancient Egypt, through to the Roman era and the Renaissance, as well as a rich collection of plaster casts.
