How lovely!

A participatory project to rediscover the value of drawing, challenge stereotypes and support a charitable cause. Take part in the call and become part of the choral installation at the Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Following the huge success of the first edition, it’s back “How lovely!”, the participatory art project conceived by the studio Imperfect Communication in collaboration with the GAM Education Department. Whilst the first call invited participants to draw a sheep, the 2026 edition focuses on an exceptional figure: the toad.

Traditionally associated with the idea of “ugliness” or imperfection, the toad provides an opportunity here to view diversity with fresh eyes and unleash one’s creativity.

How to apply for the call

The request is simple, poetic and open to everyone: Draw your own toad! You don’t need to be a professional illustrator; whether it’s a pencil drawing, a felt-tip pen drawing, a watercolour, a collage or digital art, all interpretations are welcome.

There are no age or technical restrictions. You can submit your work by 29 November 2026:

• By posting it in the designated collection boxes at the GAM and at our partners’ premises.
• By handing it in during the relevant workshops.
• By sending it in digital format to the following email address: [email protected].

All the toads collected will form a single large collaborative installation set up in the’GAM Education Area, 1–12 December 2026. The 12 December at 4.00 pm, the drawings will be auctioned off to raise money for charity.

Events and benefits for subscribers

The journey leading up to the exhibition is packed with special events and workshops that bring together art, science and theatre:

• Sunday 27 September 2026 – A day at the GAM:
  • 10.00 am – 12.00 pm | Search on Paper: A journey through art and science for adult visitors to mark the exhibition Another Twentieth Century. Works on Paper from the GAM Collections. The activity, organised by CentroScienza and the GAM Education Department, explores the link between materials and creativity.
    • Advantage Subscribers: The activity is free of charge. For subscribers, admission to the exhibition is free with Museum Pass (instead of the reduced price of €11). Booking required: [email protected].
  • 3.00 pm | Theatre performance and creative workshop: Preview of the show “A Story of Paper and Mud” organised by Faber Teater, followed by an illustration workshop led by CoopCulture to create your own toad (with a snack provided for participants).
