Woodcut artists

The exhibition explores the landscape of the’wood engraving women’s football between the second half of the’Nineteenth century and the years The 1930s. Historically regarded as a’minor art and constrained by preconceptions regarding the physical strength required for carving, the woodcut It marked an extraordinary period of redemption for female artists, thanks to the introduction of the burin and the end grain. Against this backdrop of gradual women's emancipation, numerous figures managed to carve out a leading role for themselves on the international art scene.

The exhibition covers everything from the pioneering Anglo-Saxon countries – drawing on the experience of the Wood Engraver Society and the illustrations by Gwendolen Raverat, Clare Leighton and the art publishing sector of the Eragny Press edited by Esther Bensusan e Lucien Pissarro – to the avant-garde movements of the’Central Europe. In Germany Works with a strong social message stand out from Käthe Kollwitz and the expressionist intuition of Gabriele Münter, whilst in Austria the female artists Elena Luksch-Makowsky, Broncia Koller-Pinell e Marianne Hitschmann-Steinberger brought to life the Viennese Secession, the Wiener Werkstätte and the magazine «Ver Sacrum».

TheItaly is widely exemplified by the graphic revival of the Twentieth century with Emma Dessau Goitein, Irma Pavone Grotta, Mimì Buzzacchi Quilici and the pupils of Adolfo De Carolis. A Milan, the woodcut artists Anna Beatrice D’Anna, Rosa Menni e Gemma Pero They set up a shared practice dedicated to’illustration, to the fashion and the sculpture. The festival also showcases unique experiences such as the collaboration with the Danish Ebba Holm and the Finnish Ellen Thesleff, the work of Norah Borges, the lesson from the workshops of the Japan with Kawanabe Kyosui and the dramatic prints produced in the concentration camps from Regina Lichter-Liron.
