Temporary exhibition

Werner Bischof. Point of view

Diocesan Museum Carlo Maria Martini - Milan (MI)

From Tuesday 19.05.2026 to Sunday 18.10.2026

The Diocesan Museum Carlo Maria Martini by Milan hosts a major retrospective devoted to Werner Bischof, a key figure in photojournalism of 20th century. 110 years after his birth, the exhibition celebrates an author who knew how to fuse the documentary rigour with a very high poetic intensity, distinguished by a profound approach humanistic. Member of the prestigious Magnum Photos, Bischof went through history with an empathetic gaze, documenting reality with absolute respect for the human dignity.

The exhibition route runs through 200 original vintage photographs, enriched by contact sheets and a documentary, offering a comprehensive view of its stylistic evolution. The exhibition is divided into four chronological sections: starting with the Switzerland (1932-1945), focusing on training and early experimentation; it continues with the’Europe post-war (1945-1948), where images bear witness to the devastation of the world conflict. The section dedicated to’Asia (1949-1953) collects the famous reportages in India, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong e Indochina, while the last part testifies to trips to North and South America (1953-1954) shortly before his tragic death in Peru. Each shot of Bischof is characterised by a expressive force unique, the result of a constant tension towards the understanding of reality, rendered through balanced compositions and a masterly care of the shades of black and white.
