Turner. The Enchantment of Lake Como and the Italian Landscape

The exhibition celebrates the figure of William Turner, the most illustrious exponent of the English Romanticism, through a selection of masterpieces coming entirely from the collections of the Tate by London. The exhibition focuses on the importance of the journey in the artistic training of Turner, analysing in particular the profound impact that the Italian landscape and the territory of Como had on the development of his unmistakable style.

At the Broletto Palace, visitors can admire a series of valuable watercolours portraying the Lake Como. Turner was fascinated by the morphological contrasts of the Lario, water surfaces and sudden atmospheric variations, elements that allowed him to raise the light and the reflections to true protagonists of the work. The section housed in the Civic Art Gallery broadens its gaze on the rest of’Italy, documenting the artist's stays in Venice, Rome e Naples. Here the painter's mastery in capturing the vibration of colour and the sublime atmosphere of classical places emerges. Curated by Elizabeth Brooke, exhibition offers a unique opportunity to discover how the Grand Tour has transformed the vision of Turner, making him the “painter of light” capable of influencing entire generations of subsequent artists.
