Pirelli HangarBicocca hosts the first retrospective dedicated to the work of Nan Goldin as a filmmaker, bringing together the largest corpus of slideshow never exhibited. The exhibition, divided into architectural pavilions designed by Hala Wardépresents itself as a real visual village which welcomes visitors on an emotional and immersive journey. The works stand out for their intimate, social and deeply human gaze, bearing witness to more than forty years of artistic production.
Among the main works are The Ballad of Sexual Dependencypowerful and personal account of the 1970s and 1980s, The Other Sidededicated to the artist's trans friends, and Memory Lostclaustrophobic descent into the depths of addiction. Added to these are the recent You Never Did Anything Wrong e Stendhal Syndrome, works from 2024 never before seen in Europe, exploring myth, time and personal transformation. The installation Sisters, Saints, Sibylslocated in the monumental space of the Cubeamplifies the dramatic and sacred character of the work.
The exhibition opens with a new sound installation by the Soundwalk Collectivewhich poetically introduces the viewer to Goldin's world. The collaboration with Stephan Crasneanscki e Simone Merli accompanies the spectator into an immersive dimension, amidst acoustic settings taken from previous European productions.
The vision of Nan Goldin, an iconic artist born in 1953, continues to influence contemporary photography, redefining the visual paradigms of fashion, art e social activism. Founder of the collective P.A.I.N., Goldin is a key voice in denouncing the opioid crisis and the responsibility of cultural institutions.
