The major solo exhibition dedicated to the poetic world of Susumu Shingu, one of the most influential figures in the’contemporary kinetic art, takes place against the picturesque backdrop of the Cathedral. The exhibition, curated by Shingu Atelier, traces over sixty years of research into the’Japanese artist, focusing on the close interaction between movement, nature and perception. Through constantly evolving works that respond to air, water and gravity, the exhibition transforms invisible forces into a visible experience, inviting the public to reflect on the relationship between humankind and environment and on the fragility of the planet.
The exhibition brings together a significant selection of historical and recent works, offering a comprehensive overview of the artist’s creative journey, who was born in Osaka in 1937, whose deep connection with the’Italy has its roots in the years of Roman training at the’Academy of Fine Arts under the leadership of Franco Gentilini. In this unique setting, visitors can admire 9 sculptures key milestones in his journey, alongside a group of 21 wind sculptures of the famous travelling project known worldwide as Windcaravan. The monumental space of the Steam Factory offers an immersive experience enhanced by multimedia content created by Studio Azzurro and the graphic design project for the Origoni Steiner Studio, whilst also celebrating 160 years of relations between Italy e Japan and the 45 years of twinning between Osaka e Milan. Among the models and documentary materials, there is also Sandalino, the fictional character created by Shingu who encourages us to look at the Earth with wonder.
